The "New India" narrative that the Modi government has spun over the past decade rests on three pillars—the credibility of its economic data, the integrity of its democratic processes, and the inclusiveness of its social fabric. At independence, Jawaharlal Nehru promised the nation a country of "equal opportunity, secularism, and modernity." The services sector (IT, finance) surged ahead but absorbed very limited labour; manufacturing was strategically bypassed, leaving hundreds of millions of low skilled workers with no place to go. When caste met the market, upper castes, armed with capital and educational advantages, consolidated their position, while Dalits and tribal people remained trapped in the informal economy.
The legacy of that reform crystallised in 2026. India adds about 12 million new entrants to the labour force each year, while formal, stable jobs increase by only a few million.
